Known as 自梳女 (self-combed women), these women came from Shunde, Guangdong, during the mass Chinese migration wave before World War II. Choosing celibacy, they combed their hair into a bun as a vow of independence, breaking free from traditional marriage expectations. Many Majies served as caretakers, domestic helpers, and nannies — loyal, hardworking, and devoted to the families they served. While they dedicated their lives to others, many faced lonely final years with no descendants of their own.
