Migration and the Body: Embodied Knowledge in Myanmar Dance and Its Contemporary Translation 迁移与身体:缅甸舞蹈的身体知识与当代转译

Born in Myitkyina, Kachin State in northern Myanmar and raised in Taiwan, Yun-Ti Peng is a theatre and dance practitioner with a Yunnan–Myanmar diasporic background. She holds an MFA from the Taipei National University of the Arts and is currently a doctoral student in ethnomusicology at National Taiwan University. Her long-term research centers on Myanmar dance, integrating fieldwork, interviews, and embodied practice to examine how dance becomes a vessel for cultural memory and identity within migrant communities. Her work spans Bamar and Kachin dance systems, with attention to the transformations of ritual, festive, and educational dance practices, as well as how younger generations reinterpret cultural belonging through movement.

In recent years, she has brought Myanmar dance vocabularies into contemporary performance and training contexts, seeking to develop movement approaches grounded in Southeast Asian bodily knowledge. Her talks focus on “the body as cultural knowledge,” using video, field documentation, and demonstrations to illuminate the cultural logic, rhythmic structures, and embodied aesthetics of Myanmar dance.

Peng has served as artist-in-residence at Huangpu New Village in Kaohsiung, guest lecturer at the Vancouver Film School in Shanghai, and research assistant at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Ethnology. Her solo work မချစ်ပို My Burmese Name has toured four times since 2015 and represents her sustained inquiry into border cultures, ethnic memory, and embodied storytelling.

Her training spans modern dance, ballet, Chinese opera movement, Korean court dance, Suzuki method, Myanmar dance, and other Southeast Asian movement systems. As a researcher, she draws from ethnomusicology to study Myanmar migrant communities, cross-border musicking, and cultural reconstruction, with a commitment to creating new discursive spaces for Southeast Asian bodily knowledge within contemporary performance.

緬甸密支那出生、台灣成長的劇場與舞蹈工作者,具滇緬移民背景。畢業於國立臺北藝術大學劇場藝術研究所,目前是國立臺灣大學音樂學研究所在學博士生。長期以緬甸舞蹈為研究核心,結合田野、訪談與身體實踐,探索舞蹈如何在移民社群中成為文化記憶與身分延續的載體。她的研究橫跨緬族與克欽族的樂舞系統,關注舞蹈在宗教儀式、社群節慶與現代教育中的轉化,以及當地年輕世代如何透過舞蹈重新詮釋文化歸屬。

近年,她將緬甸舞的身體語彙帶入當代表演與創作訓練之中,嘗試建立一種以東南亞身體為思考出發點的當代舞蹈語言。她的分享將以「身體作為文化知識」為核心,透過影像、田野紀錄與示範,讓觀眾理解緬甸舞的文化邏輯、節奏結構與身體觀。

她曾任高雄黃埔新村駐村藝術家、上海溫哥華電影學院特邀講師、中央研究院民族所助理等職,並持續推動緬甸舞蹈在台灣的教學與研究。個人作品《မချစ်ပို 我的緬甸名字》自2015年起巡演四站,是她在邊境文化、族裔記憶與身體敘事上的代表性實踐。

其身體訓練涵蓋現代舞、芭蕾、戲曲動作、韓國宮廷舞蹈、鈴木忠志訓練法,以及緬甸舞與其他東南亞舞蹈經驗。研究方向以民族音樂學為基礎,關注緬甸移民社群、跨境樂舞與文化再形構,並致力於讓東南亞身體知識在當代表演藝術中獲得新的對話空間。
