A collective map of stories, places, and memories.

Some of you may have noticed a little map we’ve started building on our long table, marked with a street sign that says “Jalan Gurdwara.” It’s a small kick-off —a preliminary part of a preliminary stage of a larger, ambitious initiative to map our neighborhood.

We’re new—newly moved in, new to the surroundings. While we’ve known GAMA as the oldest shopping mall, we didn’t realize it used to be a police station. We knew there’s a “little zoo” (the veterinary center), but only discovered how hidden it was after taking a real walk. And down at the end of Brick Kiln Road (yes, one of the street’s former names), we found the old rice and oil mill that once played a part in shaping Penang’s industrial economy—and now still remain its heritage legacy.

The more we dig, the more we realize how little we know. This also won’t be complete with just a few of us—it shall belongs to everyone who holds a piece of memory here. This physical map is just the first layer. We hope it invites you to contribute stories, observations, and memories. Feel free to write directly on it, or submit something online.

Note: As we’re still in the research phase, everything gathered is for internal study for now. But rest assured, we will reach out to seek your consent and properly acknowledge your contribution if and when it becomes part of something more public.
