Opening Talk 開幕主講 Comics from Asia in 2023 2023世界眼中的亞洲漫畫
Speaker : Lim Cheng Tju 林增如
In this time of flux and conflict, what is the role of comics from Asia in 2023? Apart from introducing some key writers, artists, and books to the audience, this short talk will also explore some of the current themes covered in comic works and address some questions on definitions, chronology, geography, and representations.

Everywhere All at Once: Challenging Time, Space and Storytelling in Non-linear Comics Narratives
Speaker : Nicolas Verstappen
As comics scholar Nick Sousanis puts it: “the entire composition of a [comics] page is a connected space, not reliant on a chain-like sequence linearly proceeding from point to point... rather associations that stretch web-like across the page braiding fragments into a cohesive whole. Each element is thus, one with everything.”
Being both sequential and simultaneous, the dual nature of comics art allows readers to perceive various moments and spaces all at once, which is far different from how the more linear progression of text-based and cinematographic works are experienced. From the highly creative and scaffolded comic strips from the 1920-30s (Winsor McKay, Frank King or George Herriman) to manga pages by Osamu Tezuka, alternative Eurocomics by Tobias Schalken and Olivier Schrauwen, striking superhero comics layouts by Frank Quitely and J.H. Williams III, mind-bending works by Chris Ware and Alan Moore, up to installation comics by Thai cartoonists Preecha Raksorn, Peeraphat Kittisuwat and Tuna Dunn, this talk aims at diving deep into the limitless potential of comics art to reorganise our relationship with time and space through innovative comics layouts and non-linear graphic storytelling.

Talk 座談 The Road Taken: Making Documentary Comics 紀實漫畫的漫漫長路
by Huang Pei-Shan 黃珮珊
Founded 10 years ago, Slowork Publishing makes documentary comics its main feature despite original graphic novel productions and works being rare in Asia. Its publications grow from handmade books to luxuriously printed magazines and standalone volumes that cover a range of important topics on physical and psychological realities, society, and history. Slowork Publishing has been selling it's overseas copyrights for publication in various languages. It has also won numerous awards in recent years. In this session, we will take a look at the journey taken by this one-person publishing house and let its editor-in-chief tell us how it blazed a trail amidst the challenges of funding, editing, planning, and marketing in a publishing world with no peers.

Documentary comics are created based on true events, people, feelings, social issues, and folk cultures. In contrast, narratives are typically characterised by their fictionality. This dialogue session invites us to ponder on 1) the qualities of truth and fiction held by documentary comics, 2) the line between truth and fiction, and 3) the kind of truth that we seek in the process of creation.

Workshop 工作坊 Here, Then & Now: Opening Comics Windows through Time
Conductors : Nicolas Verstappen
In 2011, MAUS author Art Spiegelman stated, “Like how does something happen, and... how does it reverberate through time? And that act of memory is important, and comics are great for memory. Like even when you have a short comic, like a three-panel comic, you've got a past, a present and a future as soon as you look at those three boxes. And that allows you to reflect and compare times.”
Building upon the concept of “windows on time in a single place”, developed by the American cartoonist Richard McGuire in his two graphic narratives titled HERE (1989 in the pages of RAW, and 2014 as an extended graphic novel), this workshop will focus on channelling the comics art’s ability to explore the flow of time in unique ways. Participants will be invited to produce a one-page comics narrative to reveal how a single place can fill itself with history over days or millennia through layered and interwoven personal, communal and -at times -political events. After a 30-minute introduction to the technique, participants will work on their pages while receiving feedback and advice from the speaker.

Whose Story and What?: On Relating Events to Comic Writing
The information that we possess often does not come from primary observation and judgement. Instead, it is usually relayed through government announcements, news reports, and gossip. The same story can vary greatly when retold by different people, whether it is done consciously or unconsciously. It should be noted that we are both receivers and producers of such information.
This workshop aims to explore the choices that one makes when recreating a visual story from a reference event. Through this hands-on activity, we shall witness the effects that such choices have on the final outcome.

Conductors : Adoor Yeh 阿多
7 x 7 is a beginner workshop that encourages participants to create a story of themselves and an object through comic art. Participants are required to bring an object from home that has existed for more than 7 years which they could not bring themselves to dispose of. Through the process of writing comic, we will explore the stories and emotional connections between the said object and its owner. This workshop welcomes the participation of the elderly and retirees who would like to experience the interweaving of personal history and their imagination.

Conductors : Lefty Julian
Is there a conversation or a snapshot of an image from your childhood that remains with you throughout your lifetime? This workshop will guide participants to turn their beloved recollections of their childhood into a tangible keepsake—by enshrining it in the form of comic.

Conductors : NOvia Shin
This workshop invites participants to walk along the streets of George Town and look closely at the exquisite views that make up the city. Whether it be the old shops hidden in the back alleys, or the furry legs of tourists waltzing through the tropical heat, they can all be made into miniature drawings to tell the story or paint a picture of what the city looks like in detail. Participants do not need to be artistic to join this workshop. All you need to bring is just your curiosity and let it lead you to the little charms of the city.
