Concept of Festival Theme
In Malaysia, a land rich in diverse ethnicities and cultures, the characteristic of ”diversity“ nurtures various forms of puppetry performance arts.
These rooted, locally developed art forms have blossomed into unique expressions. While traditional puppetry and performance arts have their origins in the ancestral homelands of different ethnic groups, once they took root here, they grew and flourished, shaped by the land’s unique environment and culture.
This year’s puppetry festival aims to gather a variety of regional puppetry styles, showcasing the multifaceted nature of puppetry as it has evolved in this land. It will be a vibrant, artistic garden of diverse voices, much like a bouquet of flowers in full bloom.

A Song of Crossing to the Southern Sea: Part of Migration History
Beginning with the age-old Song of Crossing to the Southern Sea, this talk invites the audience to retrace the migration journey of Chinese who sailed south to Malaya. It explores how music, memory, and history intertwine in a story of departure, settlement, and the search for identity—marking the many origins of Malaysian Chinese belonging.
The speaker will reflect on how contemporary Malaysian Chinese communities inherit, reinterpret, and reimagine this history. When a single song becomes more than a memory, it becomes a bridge—connecting generations, and linking the past to the possibilities of the future.

The Old Mansions & Western-style Houses of Kinmen: Echoes of the Migration Journey
Dr. Tsai Ming-Hsuan
When we talk about “migration,” we often focus on the departure from China. But in Jinmen (Kinmen), many migrated to Southeast Asia, returning with wealth to build striking “fan zai lou”—colonial-style mansions. In this lecture, Taiwanese theatre scholar Dr. Tsai Ming-Hsuan explores how these architectural forms reflect a reverse gaze: from the periphery back to the homeland. These buildings are more than homes—they are symbols of aspiration, identity, and the memory of migration.
