Literature often begins with overlaps—of language and memory, childhood and creation, hometown and elsewhere. Chaoshan is more than a geographic marker; it is the texture of a language, the pattern of a memory, a quiet glow within a culture.
Two young novelists born in 1993—Chen Runting from Chenghai and Lim Jun Long from Penang—will gather at Penang’s Book Island for a cross-regional dialogue on Chaoshan literature. Though their creative paths differ, their works reveal striking parallels: both writers share Chaoshan roots and write in Mandarin to explore their cultural landscapes; each has published a short story collection composed of seven stories, with covers that—coincidentally or not—feature shades of blue. Blue, a color of introspection and depth, also reflects their places of origin—Chenghai and Penang Island—both inextricably tied to the sea.
This dialogue will begin with their creative paths, expanding into reflections on the times and perceptions of language: As Chaozhou culture moves beyond its place of origin, how is it inherited, transformed, and reborn in this ongoing flow? Can literature serve as a mirror of this process, reflecting the past while casting light on the future? The discussion will also delve into the bilateral exchange of "domestic/overseas Chaozhou literature," examining the dynamic interplay between the new waves of Chinese literature and the emerging forces of Malaysian Chinese literature. It will spotlight the rising creative voices in the Chinese literary scene, presenting the evolving expressions of Chaozhou literature in diverse cultural contexts.
Speakers
Born in Chenghai, Shantou—his hometown famously known as the "Toy City"—he has developed a unique sensibility toward "games" and "methods." He approaches language as an ever-evolving terrain, simulating how individuals navigate the search for identity and belonging between fiction and reality, in a constant process of movement, fragmentation, and reassembly. Super Mario Adventure draws upon childhood memories and the pixelated aesthetics of early video games, sketching a labyrinthine journey of growth through fragmented rhythms. The game becomes both metaphor and method. Across seven stories, he constructs a “textual copy” governed by free will, repeatedly probing the choices and costs of socialization—between levels, through obstacles, and along uncertain paths.
A native of Penang, Lim’s fiction traverses the landscapes of Malaysia, echoes of past lives, and the porous boundaries of dreams. With quiet, restrained prose, he writes of wandering spirits, entangled destinies, and the subtle threads connecting people across time. Each story is a sand mandala: fragile, fleeting, yet capable of capturing the faint breath and glimmers of light that slip through the cracks. Wu Ming-Yi once remarked that his "narrative flows smoothly, yet often evokes a sigh of contemplation in certain paused moments." Lim’s words are light yet profound, pointing unerringly to a critical state of being.
