“Cinder” embodies the lingering warmth and resonance left in the wake of fire, often revealed in an intricate interplay of black and gray. In ceramic artistry, these remnants of flame are masterfully transformed into surface textures, capturing the immense energy of fire and its profound dialogue with nature.
· Raku Firing Ceramic pieces are rapidly heated to high temperatures before being swiftly removed and placed into combustible materials such as wood shavings or paper. The sudden exposure to fire and carbonization etches unrepeatable patterns onto the surface, creating layered, dynamic textures.
· Smoke Firing In this process, ceramics are placed in a sealed refractory chamber alongside various combustible materials. As these materials burn, the rising smoke and settling carbon residues imbue the surface with subtle, smoky hues, evoking a quiet and contemplative aesthetic.
CINDER is an exhibition dedicated to the techniques of Raku and Smoke Firing, bringing together eight ceramic artists from different regions. Each piece bears the distinctive imprint of fire—a visual language forged by heat and time. Through fire and smoke, every ceramic work becomes a vessel of time, embodying a depth and character that is both profound and unique.
